You typed your number, WhatsApp says it sent a 6-digit code, and nothing arrives. The resend timer is counting down and you are wondering whether the number is the problem.
In most cases it is not. WhatsApp verification fails for a short list of reasons: the number was entered in the wrong format, the SMS is slow, the phone cannot receive SMS right now, or WhatsApp has rate-limited the number after too many requests.
1. Check the number on the confirmation screen
WhatsApp shows the number back to you before it sends the code. Look for a duplicated country code (+44 44…), a leading 0 after the country code, or a missing digit. If it is wrong, tap Wrong number? and fix it rather than requesting more codes. Our phone number checker shows the correct international format for any country.
2. Wait for the full timer, then use “Call me”
WhatsApp shows a countdown before you can resend. Wait for it to finish. When the timer ends, the Call me option reads the code out in a voice call, which often works when SMS is delayed. Do not tap resend repeatedly: each request makes the previous code invalid and brings you closer to a lock-out.
3. Make sure the phone can receive SMS
- The SIM is in the phone and has signal, not just Wi-Fi.
- Airplane mode is off and the SMS inbox is not full.
- No SMS-blocking or spam-filter app is hiding short-code messages.
- If you are abroad, roaming is on, or you use a number that works where you are.
4. “Try again in X hours”
This message means WhatsApp has paused verification for that number because of too many attempts. Nothing but time clears it. Waiting out the timer and trying once is faster than contacting support. Reinstalling the app does not reset it.
5. Landline, VoIP and shared numbers
WhatsApp accepts landlines through the voice call option, but it often refuses VoIP and widely shared numbers. Public “free SMS” inboxes are a poor choice: the numbers have been used by thousands of people and anyone can read the code. A private mobile number rented for WhatsApp is far more likely to work. What should you do first when the code does not arrive?
Work through the causes in order of likelihood and change one thing at a time. That way you can tell what fixed it, and you avoid triggering a rate limit with repeated requests.
A typical case: someone moving abroad enters their new local number with a leading zero after the country code, waits, then taps resend three times. WhatsApp then asks them to wait an hour. The fix was the number format, but the resends cost an hour. Read the number back first, then wait for the timer.
- Read the number back on the confirmation screen.
- Wait for the countdown, then request one voice call.
- Check signal, airplane mode and SMS filters.
- If you see a wait time, wait it out fully before trying once.
- Switch to a private mobile number only if your own number is unavailable.
Lawful SMS verification only. Follow each platform’s terms. Ucode is not for bulk account farming or ban evasion.
Key takeaways
- Format first: a duplicated country code or extra zero causes many failed WhatsApp codes.
- Use the call option: after the timer ends, a voice call often gets through when SMS does not.
- Respect the timer: repeated resends lead to multi-hour lock-outs that only time clears.
In short
Most missing WhatsApp codes come from a formatting slip, a slow SMS or too many requests. Check the number, wait for the timer, use Call me and make sure the phone can receive SMS. Avoid public free-SMS numbers; use your own SIM or a private mobile number.
